Sit Like a Woman!

Distinguishing between "lady-likeness" and womanhood.

One of your host's pet peeves with oppressive socio-political-cultural construct and Black girls-to-women is that perpetual admonition, "sit like a lady!"

Whenever I found myself confronted with these seemingly professional, in-my-business knee-clampers, I always wanted to have the chance to tell them, "you need to sit like me!"

I stumbled across this great, relatively unconventional image, reached out to its central figure and am pleased to introduce you to Row Lewis, sitting like (an unabridged, undaunted, uninhibited, uncondensed, adventurous, resolute, self actualized) woman.

Grenadian born, Row Lewis of Raleigh, North Carolina is a spoken word artist, gospel singer, and performs with her family populated musical group, "Fresh Fire."

She is an ordained minister having studied Comparative and World Religion, Psychology and Journalism at University of Florida and Hope Theological Seminary.

She is Executive Director, Spiritual Advisor and Life Coach at Liberty Fellowhip Center, anon-demoninational and interfaith group committed to building bridges between people and celebrating their commonalities rather than highlighting opportunities for division, discord, and misunderstanding."

The point I make here is similar to her center's literature which explains that they "address the needs of the total person . . . ." in promoting, "the spiritual, educational, physical, socio-economic enhancement of every person - regardless of race, gender, culture, class" . . . and also attractional orientation.

One might consider undertaking academic research that examines the extent to which women who plug in with this sense of physical-emotional liberation may give and think more deeply, create more intensely, problem solve more intelligently and impact the world in a context of fairness, inclusion and cultural readyness.

Here's to sista's - Black women - being fully engaged with our absolute right and obligation to be our whole selves.
