EASY-PICK:

CONGRESSMAN ELECT, KEITH ELLISON FOR PRESIDENT

As far back as three years ago, names of Presidential hopefuls were floating the landscape. "Hillary 2008" bumper stickers were glued to car fenders as early as in 2005.

Here is my easy pick for a potentially great contender. Congressman Elect, Keith Maurice Ellison (D-MN), raised in Detroit and a graduate of Wayne State University is the first ever Muslim elected to the U.S. Congress.

As most of us know by now, he has announced he will not take his oath of office on the Bible, instead making plans to swear in on the Holy Qur'an (God forbid).

All the Muslim haters bigoted against its people and not their religion, insist he should take the oath as they would. Of course, most intelligence falls to the ground and crumbles before it reaches them,
so - sh-h-h-h - they don't know if he takes the oath based upon their religious beliefs, his oath would be half-hearted.

During his intense campaign, his detractors went so far as to suggest, and in some cases outright accuse a link between he and "our enemies" (inferring that our enemies are their old friends).

Not only is it Congressman Elect Ellison's right and obligation to vow with the literature of his own faith, but some elected officials in history have chosen not to use any book at all for their oath taking. His decision is most appropriate.

But, what causes this deflecting controversy is not the Qur'an in and of itself, but the Congressman Elect's unequivocal threat to their philsophical weaknesses. For instance, his campaign site laments, "The environment needs to be a lens through which we view nearly every policy issue."

His literature expresses opposition to "vindictive legislation" directed against immigrants, saying he will instead support providing a "path to citizenship for the 11 million people who are already in the U.S. working and paying taxes."

He doesn't believe in "simplistic axioms" such as 'tough on crime' and 'war on drugs' as viable solutions to crime, preferring the phrase 'smart on crime.'" He is an ardent supporter of strengthening labor movements and is a proponent of "Living Wage Ordinances"

He is in favor of comprehensive sex education which includes information about abstinence, and he is also pro a woman's right to choose what to do with her body.

On top of these positions and the enormous bravery one must gather to excercise one's right to use the book of his convictions for his own swearing in, below is Mr. Ellison's speech as Minnesota State Legislator on that state's move to pass anti "Gay Marriage" legislation.

In a writing on the subject, then State Representative Ellison questioned ministerial vulnerability to befriend right wing bigots, asking whether harassing Same Gender Loving folk would "help us to fight for justice, to set the captives free, to rebuild the wasted cities or to feed the hungry?" He asked whether a constitutional amendment would "help us welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, heal the sick, or visit with those in prison?" He went on, "Will it save one heterosexual marriage or cause one couple who is living together to go and jump the broom?"

He concludes, "If not, then I hope our ministers will tell the religious conservatives we just don't have the time. We're busy."

I know of no candidate with plans on running for President who is as clear, pointed, courageous and true as he on so many issues - and who seems prepared to go against some grain.

If I'm proven mistaken, I can always change my mind - and, besides rarely do the really great ones ever run anyway. If so or if not, I believe a Congressman Ellison can mature to become one of the most dynamic people on the political scene and one who would have a deeper sense of humanity in general and Black humanity in particular than your "average bear."
