Tipping Into the World of Black Vegans

Thinking About Contemplating Becoming a Vegetarian

This may be as much for non-vegetarians as for vegetarians in that I think in every beef and foul eater such as myself is a vegetarian screaming to get out (and also screaming to stay in).

I understand that eating meat is an addiction, and that most of what we eat is not meant for human consumption. So, if nothing else, this is is an encouragement for all of us to eat more vegetarian meals, and to consider and reconsider the idea of transitioning to vegan life.

On Being Vegan in Ghana and Nigeria

"The “Vegetarian Restaurant” near “37″ was the better of the two restaurants, with much lower prices and much tastier, and completely traditional, Ghanaian vegetarian meals.

The restaurant near Nkrumah circle served a lot of rice dishes, veggie burgers, and so on."

Should you become a vegetarian? Think before you eat

The Late Coretta Scott King: "I feel blessed that I was introduced to this lifestyle more than 12 years ago by Dexter," she says.

"I prefer to eat mostly raw or 'living' foods. The benefits for me are increased energy, a slowing of the aging process, and I have none of the diseases like hypertension, heart disease and diabetes that many people my age seem to get."

The Great Meat and Protein Myth

"The message from this classic research is simple.

If you look at a single food, animal products have the upper hand in providing protein quality.

However, when you look at the entire diet, then the pure vegetarian diet emerges as superior in protein quality."

Mama's Mock "Meatloaf"

Black vegans get no love

(Not exactly a ringing endorsement, but we no struggle.)

"Black vegans get no love. We’re shunned at dinner parties, given mistrustful glances on buffet lines and never asked to contribute to the church potluck.

I’ve been told more than a few times that my eating habits are “bourgeois,” as if the deletion of meat and dairy from my diet has somehow placed me in a culinary caste system."

Rearing cattle produces more greenhouse gases than driving cars, UN report warns

"As forests are cleared to create new pastures, it is a major driver of deforestation, especially in Latin America where, for example, some 70 per cent of former forests in the Amazon have been turned over to grazing."

How Harlem Eats

"One of the local food activists who frequent Raw Soul is Moriba Jackson. When Jackson thinks of buying food she always sees color.

Not just the race of the people who populate Harlem and the South Bronx, the areas where she lives and works, but the color of the local food itself."

Mumbai, Street Food

Mention of blasts here refer to previous bombings, and note they seem very emotionally removed and even unaware of the cultural-political circumstances surrounding those attacks)

Mosetta Stone

(Difficult to see, but interesting work).

"For the tofu, I made a scramble out of zucchini, spinach, and red bell pepper (for color). I salted and sauteed the vegetables until soft and a lot of the liquid was gone.

Then I added the crumbled tofu and cooked for about 10 minutes more. I turned off the heat and stirred in huge spoonfuls of pesto until it was geen enough for me."

Veganism As a White Privilege

Vegan Soul Food, Pizza and More in the Bay Area

(To clarify, regarding the gentleman's comments here, if a Vegan passes away it is more probable that he or she might have passed on sooner on a diet with meat and therefore lived longer because they were Vegan.

This is also to send into retirement that same argument often used by cigarette smokers).
